Who doesn’t love taco night?
The problem is that conventional tacos usually come with a few ingredients that don’t fit very well into an animal-based diet: corn or flour tortillas, seed oils, beans, and toppings like onions and peppers.
So we teamed up with AnimalBasedBae to make a version using simple animal-based ingredients instead.
These animal-based tacos feature homemade egg-and-cheese tortillas, your choice of beef, chicken, or shrimp, plus sour cream, guacamole, grated cheese, and a fresh pineapple-cucumber salsa.

What Are Animal-Based Tacos?
Animal-based tacos take the basic idea of a taco (meat, a tortilla, creamy toppings, salsa) and rebuild it using foods that fit an animal-based diet.
An animal-based diet centers around nutrient-dense animal foods like:
- Beef and other ruminant meats
- Organ meats
- Eggs
- Dairy
- Seafood
- Fruit
- Honey and maple syrup
It also generally limits foods that may be harder to digest or that contain higher levels of plant defense compounds, including grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and many leaves, stems, and nightshades.
That’s why these tacos skip the usual corn or flour tortillas, beans, onions, tomatoes, and peppers.
Instead, the tortillas are made with eggs and cheese, and the salsa is made with pineapple, cucumber, lime, and salt.
You still get the combination of savory meat, creamy toppings, something fresh and acidic, and a soft tortilla.

How to Make Animal-Based Tacos
1. Make the Tortillas
- Whisk the eggs and grated cheddar together until everything is evenly combined.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and pour in enough of the mixture to make a thin, tortilla-sized round.
- Let it cook until the bottom is set, then carefully flip it and cook the other side.
- Repeat until you’ve used all the mixture, then set the tortillas aside.
2. Cook the Meat
Ground Beef: Brown the ground beef in a skillet and season it with salt.
Duck or chicken: Grill or pan-cook the duck or chicken until cooked through. Let it rest for a few minutes, then slice or chop it into bite-sized pieces.
Shrimp: Season the shrimp with salt and a squeeze of fresh lemon. Cook in a skillet or on the grill until the shrimp are pink and opaque.
Or try another cut of meat, like tongue!

3. Make the Guacamole
- Mash the avocado with lime juice and salt.
You can leave it chunky or make it smooth. No need to overcomplicate it.
4. Make the Pineapple Cucumber Salsa
- Peel and seed the cucumber, then dice it along with the pineapple.
- Toss the two together with fresh lime juice and a little salt.
The pineapple gives you the sweetness you’d normally get from a salsa, while the cucumber adds crunch.
5. Build the Tacos
Fill each tortilla with your favorite meat, then add whatever toppings you like.
We used:
- Sour cream
- Guacamole
- Pineapple cucumber salsa
- Grated cheddar
You can also set everything out on the table and let everyone build their own.

Why Use Egg and Cheese Tortillas?
Finding a good tortilla is usually the hardest part of making animal-based tacos.
Corn and flour tortillas don’t fit the animal-based bill, and a lot of packaged grain-free tortillas still contain gums, seed oils, or other ingredients you may be trying to avoid.
These are much simpler: just eggs and cheese cooked together in a skillet.
The egg holds everything together, and the cheese gives the tortilla enough structure to wrap around the fillings.
They’re softer than a traditional corn tortilla, but they work surprisingly well.
Make It a Taco Bar
This is a great recipe for a casual dinner with friends or family.
Put everything out separately:
- Egg and cheese tortillas
- Ground beef
- Shrimp
- Duck or chicken
- Guacamole
- Pineapple cucumber salsa
- Sour cream
- Grated cheese
- Lime wedges
Then everyone can make their tacos exactly how they want them.
It also means you don’t have to assemble 12 tacos yourself while everyone else is already eating.
What to Serve With Animal-Based Tacos
These are pretty filling on their own, but a few simple sides work well:
- Watermelon
- Sweet potato wedges with cilantro
- White rice
If you’re serving a bigger group, white rice is an easy way to stretch the meal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are tacos animal-based?
Traditional tacos usually aren’t considered animal-based because they often include corn or flour tortillas, beans, seed oils, and vegetables like onions and peppers. Animal-based tacos use meat, eggs, dairy, fruit, and other foods that fit an animal-based approach instead.
What can I use instead of corn tortillas?
Egg-and-cheese tortillas are one easy option. You can also skip the tortilla and make a taco bowl with meat, avocado, cheese, sour cream, and salsa.
Can I make these tortillas ahead of time?
Yes. Cook them ahead of time, refrigerate them, and warm them briefly in a skillet before serving.
Can I make these dairy-free?
You can easily leave off the sour cream and cheese toppings, but the tortilla itself does contain cheese. For a dairy-free option, make the fillings and serve them as a taco bowl instead.
