Issue #113: 7 ways to prevent microplastics getting into your brain (and testicles)

A study published earlier this month found microplastics in the human brain.

Specifically, the microplastics were found in the olfactory bulb – the brain region responsible for processing smell.

But it gets worse.

Because it’s now estimated that each week, the average person ingests up to the equivalent of a 5-gram CREDIT CARD in microplastics.

Microplastics vary in size. Some are visible, but many are 1000x smaller than a grain of sand. They arise from the slow breakdown of larger plastics in our environment, such as plastic bottles, supplement containers, packaged food, synthetic clothing, synthetic furniture, etc.

One of the biggest ways they accumulate in our bodies is via inhalation, specifically from indoor environments (if you were looking for another reason to spend more time outdoors, now you have one!)
The big problem is, these microplastics don’t just pass through our bodies. They accumulate in critical areas like our bloodstreamlungstesticlesplacenta, and now brain.

Microplastics contain toxic chemicals like BPA, BPS, and phthalates, which are designed to make plastics stronger but have been shown to be incredibly harmful to our health.

Specifically, they are linked with endocrine disruption, including harming male and female fertility. They also impact pregnancy and child development, including impaired fetal growth and increased risk of behavioral disorders like ADHD, anxiety, and depression in children.

The cardiovascular system is also not spared. Microplastics have been found embedded in arterial plaques, correlating with a 4.5-fold increase in the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Just like seed oils, microplastics will be one of the defining health issues of our time.

But while it may feel like we’re powerless to do anything about them, that’s not the case.

7 simple ways to reduce your exposure to microplastics:

#1 Improve your indoor air quality with a HEPA air filter. Open more windows, and where possible, opt for natural materials over synthetics. Even better, spend more time outdoors! This could be one of the biggest ways to reduce your exposure. Because as we mentioned, the biggest source of microplastics is via inhalation in indoor environments. That’s how they get in your brain – through your nose, and into the olfactory bulb of your brain.

#2 Ditch the plastic water bottles and lunchboxes and pick up glass or stainless steel alternatives instead – easy peasy but a big game-changer.

#3 Bring your own coffee cup when getting takeout coffee (the takeout cups are lined in plastic (heat + plastic = no bueno)

#4 Choose natural fabric clothing over synthetic fibres like polyester (which shed microplastics).

#5 Replace the plastic cutting boards with wood (Chopping your food on a plastic cutting board releases millions of microplastic particles into your food)

#6 Store food in glass containers instead of plastic. Never heat food in plastic.

#7 Choose fresh animal-based foods over processed, canned and packaged foods which always come in plastic.

Fun Fact: We will never put our products in plastic for this reason.

Our organ supplements come in glass, and Animal-Based Protein is also the first 100% plastic-free protein powder on the market.
