Issue #162: How to exercise as a busy parent

Hey Heart & Soil moms & dads,

You know how we’re always talking about optimal sleep, consistent exercise, and morning sun exposure?

And you know when you’ve got young kids, that advice can feel like it’s from another planet?

Yeah, I get it.

I’ve got twin girls who are 5, and a 2 year old son.

I don’t have the option of uninterrupted 60-minute workouts every day.

And as much as I’d love to watch the sunset every evening, it’s kinda’ tricky during bathtime.

But…

While prioritizing your health becomes alot harder as a parent…

It also becomes more IMPORTANT.

And therein lies the challenge.

We can’t go ‘all in’ on this health thing, but we also can’t give up entirely.

We’ve got to get creative.

And we also need things to be convenient.

That’s why every parent needs to know about microworkouts.

These are short bursts of exercise done throughout the day, and while they can’t replace the equivalent of a full uninterrupted workout, they soon add up.

Here are some examples you can try:

#1 Kitchen pushups:
Simple but effective. Anytime you are in the kitchen or family room, and the kids are occupied for 30-60 seconds, crank out a set of pushups.

#2 Baby lifts:
Every time your baby wants to be picked up, turn it into an opportunity to do 10-20 squats while holding them.

#3 Toddler dance party:
Turn on your kid’s favorite songs and hold a spontaneous dance party. Great for cardio, and great for bonding with your kids.

#4 Toy clean-up lunges: Turn toy cleanup into a workout by doing lunges across the room as you pick up toys. It’s a way to clean up while also working out your legs and glutes.

#5 Wheelbarrow / piggyback rides: Transform playtime into a workout. Not only will this help maintain your muscle mass, but kids love it!

#6 Garden workout
I keep a set of kettlebells in the garden all year round, which means I can get in a micro-workout anytime I’m outside with the kids.

The best thing about these micro-workouts is that when your kids see you prioritizing your health and fitness, it means they are more likely to adopt those habits themselves.

So, every pushup, dance move, and lunge sets a foundation for a lifetime of health, not just for you but also for your kids.
